William Valentine
Be quiet and careful. You'll want to get out of here before Leonard comes back. He won't like that you're here. I won't say anything against Leonard and I don't want to hear anything said against him either, but that doesn't mean you can't duck down that alley, take a right at the Hanging Tree and get your pretty little ass out of the Orchestra Pit before someone puts it on the menu. Not making a dent, am I? In that case, here are some ground rules: don't talk about music, except to agree with him. Don't compliment him. And if he starts talking to the air, run.
Name: William Valentine.
Titles: Angel of the Pit, The Boy With the Golden Voice.
Rules: Nothing.
Height: 5'10." Weight: 177 lbs.
Hair color: Dark brown. Eye color: Violet.
Distinguishing marks: Wears glasses.
Appearance: William Valentine is a broad-shouldered, exceedingly handsome man who tends to wear exquisitely tailored suits, often with a shimmer of another color in their weave. The suits cover an extensive collection of tattoos, all of which have a meaning.
Colors: None.
Symbol: None.
Personality: The reason William is so popular with Leonard is that he is stable, gentle and capable of taking a lot of abuse without ever returning it. He is like a rock, on which storms blow themselves out, leaving the rock exactly as it was before. Many negotiate with Leonard through William, preferring to deal with someone so obviously intelligent and so obviously more together than his master. William's negative points are that he is cynical, often depressed, and has sneaky and conniving moments.
Parentage: Unknown. Orphaned.
Age: 98, though he does not look it.
Known siblings: None.
Known children: None.
Known agents: Some of Leonard's by association, since he is Leonard's right hand man. He also has a few well placed spies and contacts of his own throughout the City.
Thumbnail History: William Valentine was one of the many orphans of the Orchestra Pit. He was raised in the streets, a member of a gang of children of similar backgrounds, until he was fifteen and Leonard Alemane found him. Leonard was looking for trouble with William's gang, and had in fact beaten a few of the adult members to unconsciousness, when Valentine, who had heard stories about Leonard, began to sing. His voice was so perfect and pure that Leonard's violence stopped instantly and he listened, fascinated.
After that, Leonard took William back with him to the Opera House, where he cleaned the boy up and began to teach him, nurturing his talents and his voice. Leonard soon discovered that another of Valentine's amazing talents was his resilience. He could take anything that Leonard could throw at him, and he loved Leonard. It was clear and it was pure and there was nothing Leonard could do but accept it.
When he grew older, William became Leonard's right hand man, taking over many of the social and financial aspects of Leonard's job as Lord of the Orchestra Pit. He also became Leonard's lover, and while he was never Leonard's only lover, he was always the closest to Alemane of anyone.
William as Parent: William is a gay man, and has spent most of his time faithful to Leonard, so the odds of his having biological children are low and would require a very good story. He can be considered a father figure to the children that Leonard takes in, and to them he is kind, caring, and often a bulwark against the storms of Leonard Alemane. On the other hand, he isn't particularly good with children and tends to treat them like little adults and expect them to act the same way.
William as Employer: William acts as a supervisor to most of Leonard's agents, and often they report directly to him and he passes the information on to Leonard later. He has his own agents scattered across the City as well, so that he can keep tabs on some things that Leonard doesn't care about but which Valentine feels are important. He's cool and professional in his attitudes toward his employees, and rarely tries to get close to them or to find out more about them than he needs to know to control them.
William as Friend: His friends are Leonard's friends, for the most part. Many of them are talented musicians, others are Leonard's lovers. He gets along better with men than women, and most of his relationships are characterized by his loyalty, his dependability and his cool reserve.
William Romantically: Ever since he and Leonard hooked up when he was twenty-five, William has not had many partners except for Leonard. Despite the fact that Leonard is not loyal to William sexually, he gets very jealous of anyone who enjoys William's attentions, and the few times William tried to venture out and seek pleasure elsewhere, Leonard has killed William's partners. On the other hand, neither Leonard nor William is against a menage a trois. As a lover, William is a rock. He will always be there and offers his love unconditionally and his support unwaveringly.
